Flèche du pont Jacques-Gabriel

Pont Jacques-Gabriel

In 1716, the mediaeval bridge collapsed after the ice on the surface of the river broke up. Regent Philippe d’Orléans authorised the construction of a new bridge, designed by Jacques V Gabriel, Senior Engineer with the Bridges & Roadways department. The work continued until 1724. It included construction of the bridge, demolition of the fortifications and development of the quays. The bridge’s humpback design was rarely used in later years. The pyramid is the work of sculptor Guillaume Coustou.
